Shariah is the term for the rules that govern the Muslim way of life.
The main sources of Shariah are the Qur'an (the Holy book of Islam), the Sunnah (the way the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) lived His life, including His sayings known as Hadith) and centuries of scholarly interpretations.
The span of Shariah is wide reaching, as it defines the individual and collective religious obligations and rituals - as well as day-to-day worldly matters, rights and duties - of Muslims. Shariah Law provides protection to the sanctity of society and to the individual.
